Find out what an eSIM is, how to configure an eSIM on your iPhone, and the steps for moving your phone number to a different iPhone.
What Is eSIM on iPhone?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is an industry-standard digital SIM built directly into your iPhone. It removes the need for a physical SIM card and allows you to activate a mobile data plan digitally.
With eSIM, you can:
-
Switch between mobile plans without swapping SIM cards
-
Store multiple eSIM profiles (availability depends on model and region)
-
Activate new plans online through supported carriers
-
Use dual SIM functionality on compatible iPhone models
eSIM offers greater flexibility, improved convenience, enhanced security, and seamless connectivity—especially when traveling internationally.
Requirements for Using eSIM on iPhone
To use eSIM, you need:
-
iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later compatible iPhone models
-
A wireless carrier that supports eSIM
-
A Wi-Fi connection during setup (in most regions)
Important notes:
-
eSIM availability varies by country, carrier, and iPhone model.
-
Some regions offer dual SIM with two physical nano-SIM cards instead of eSIM support.
-
Carrier restrictions may apply.
For the most accurate and up-to-date compatibility details, check with your mobile service provider or visit the official Apple Inc. website.
How to Activate an eSIM on iPhone
You can activate an eSIM during initial iPhone setup or after setup is complete. The available activation method depends on your carrier.
1. Use eSIM Quick Transfer
If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer, you can move your number from your previous iPhone to your new one without contacting your carrier.
Before starting, make sure:
-
Both devices are signed in with the same Apple ID
-
Your previous iPhone is unlocked with its passcode
-
Both devices are nearby with Bluetooth enabled
-
Both devices are running the latest available iOS version
During setup, follow the on-screen instructions to transfer your physical SIM or eSIM. Once the new iPhone activates the plan, the previous SIM will be deactivated.
You can also transfer after setup:
-
Open Settings on your new iPhone.
-
Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on region).
-
Select Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions.
If you see a banner that says Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan, tap it and complete the steps.
2. Use eSIM Carrier Activation
If your carrier assigned an eSIM to your iPhone at purchase, activation usually occurs automatically during setup.
If you receive a notification that says Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed:
-
Tap the notification.
-
Open Settings.
-
Select Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed.
-
Tap Continue.
-
Place a test call to confirm connectivity.
3. Activate Using a QR Code
If your carrier provides a QR code:
During iPhone setup:
-
Turn on your iPhone.
-
When the Set Up Cellular screen appears, tap Use QR Code.
-
Scan the QR code and follow the instructions.
After setup:
-
Open Settings.
-
Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
-
Select Add eSIM.
-
Choose Use QR Code.
-
Scan the code and follow the prompts.
If you don’t have a QR code, contact your carrier for activation assistance.
Moving an eSIM from Android or Other Devices
If you are transferring from an Android or another non-Apple device, you must contact your carrier to move your mobile number to your new iPhone. The transfer process depends on carrier policies and regional regulations.
